However, it is not unusual for it to fail. Here at Greensboro Garage Door Experts, we have dealt with so many garage door issues; including faulty remote control systems. In this article, we present reasons of garage door won’t open or close with remote control.
Remote related issues
Dead or weak batteries
Before you rush to hire garage door opener repair service, you might want to check the condition of your remote’s batteries to confirm that they are working as they should.
Poorly maintained battery contacts
When the remote’s battery contacts and terminals are dirty, wet and worn they can fail to pass current to the circuit board. Make sure you dry and polish them.
Your remote has a small range
If your remote control system is new, there is the possibility that it has a small range and thus the sensor cannot sense the remote from the distance you are used to. To correct this, purchase a universal garage door opener receiver that has a desirable range.
Dirty or damaged remote eye
The part that sends signals from the remote is called the eye’. It can fail to do so effectively when it is dirty or severely damaged. Simply wipe it thoroughly with a wet cloth. If it is damaged beyond repair you can get a new one.
Worn out remote
Regular use can wear out your remote over time especially if it has been used carelessly and that can result to normal wear and tear that occurs with every device.
Sensor related issues
The sensors of your garage door are located about 5” off the floor on each side. Each one has an LED light for sensing. When the sensors fail, your remote and keypad will not work. Here are some reasons why the sensor can fail.
Dirty lens
Just like the remote, the sensor too has a photo eye for communicating with the remote using infrared signals. When it is dirty the two cannot communicate. Therefore, you might want to ensure that it is thoroughly wiped.
Out of line photo eye
The two photo eyes of your garage door (located on either side) usually have an invisible beam between them. When the door is misaligned, the beam becomes broken and thus it can’t communicate with the remote. Therefore, make sure they are in line.
Detached wires
Safety sensors usually have connection cables that supply power. The remote and garage door will fail to communicate when the wires are detached. Follow the connections to ensure that the wiring is still intact.
Power/Water damage
Cases of power surge, fluctuation, lightening strikes, or water flooding can fry the power system of your garage door and crash it completely. In such a case, a DIY is not recommended. Your best solution would be to hire the services of a garage door maintenance company.
Ultimately, remember that you can always reset your remote control system.
